VPS (virtual private server)

A remote computer you rent in a data centre to run a trading platform around the clock, typically used for expert advisors or to reduce latency to a broker’s servers.

A VPS is a virtual machine hosted in a data centre that you control remotely. Traders use one to keep MetaTrader, cTrader or another platform running 24 hours a day without leaving their own computer switched on.

Why traders use one

  • Automated trading: an expert advisor or trading bot only works while the platform is running and connected. A VPS keeps it going through power cuts, home internet problems and laptop updates.
  • Client-side orders: on MetaTrader, trailing stops are managed by the terminal, so they only move while the platform is open.
  • Latency: a VPS located near the broker's trade servers (often in financial data centres in London, New York or elsewhere) can reduce the time an order takes to arrive, which matters mostly to very short-term strategies.

MetaQuotes offers a built-in virtual hosting service inside MetaTrader, and many brokers provide a VPS at no charge to clients who meet a minimum deposit or trading volume. Independent providers sell general or trading-focused VPS plans.

Example

Illustrative figures: a VPS costs 25 euros a month and you trade 4 standard lots a month on an EA. That adds 6.25 euros per lot to your costs, on top of spread and commission. If you trade 40 lots, it is 0.63 euros per lot. Whether it is worth it depends on how much the strategy actually needs constant uptime.

Practical notes

  • A VPS does not make a strategy better; it only keeps it running.
  • Keep the VPS secure: strong passwords, updates, and no unknown software. It holds your trading login.
  • Free VPS offers tied to volume requirements are a reason to check whether the condition encourages you to trade more than you otherwise would.
