CFD margin calculator
Margin is the deposit your broker holds while a leveraged position is open. It depends on the position’s full value and the leverage allowed for that kind of instrument.
Margin is a deposit, not the most you can lose: profit and loss are calculated on the full position value. EU and UK retail positions are closed out when equity falls to 50% of required margin.
Type your broker’s current price. Conversions into your account currency use delayed exchange rates. Results are estimates; your broker’s contract specification is what counts.
How it works
- Position value = lots × units per lot × price, converted into your account currency.
- Required margin = position value ÷ leverage (20:1 = 5%, 10:1 = 10%, 5:1 = 20%).
- The leverage list starts at the ESMA retail limit for the instrument you pick.
Questions
Is margin the most I can lose?
No. Profit and loss are calculated on the full position value. Negative balance protection stops a retail account going below zero, but the whole balance can be lost.
Why is margin on shares so much higher?
ESMA set 5:1 for individual shares because single stocks can move much more than an index, for example on earnings or takeover news.
