CFD position size calculator

Pick the instrument, enter your account size, the share of it you are prepared to lose and how far away your stop is. The calculator returns the position size that keeps the loss at that amount.

Brokers round to their minimum step, so round down. The stop is not a cap on losses: gaps and slippage can fill it at a worse price.

Type your broker’s current price. Conversions into your account currency use delayed exchange rates. Results are estimates; your broker’s contract specification is what counts.

How it works

  • Amount at risk = balance × risk %.
  • Value of one point (or price step) for one unit, converted from the instrument’s currency into your account currency.
  • Units = amount at risk ÷ (stop distance × value per unit); lots = units ÷ units per lot. Contract sizes vary by broker, so edit "units per lot" to match yours.

Questions

Why does the contract size matter so much?

Because it sets how much one point is worth. One index CFD lot might be worth 1, 10 or 25 per point depending on the broker, so the same stop distance can mean very different money.

Do index CFDs gap?

Yes, especially at the cash open and after weekends or news. A stop becomes a market order when it triggers, so gaps can fill it at a worse price.

What leverage applies?

For EU retail clients ESMA caps leverage at 20:1 on major indices and gold, 10:1 on other commodities and minor indices, and 5:1 on individual shares.
